It is not unusual for events such as the conventions, and the Presidential Inauguration, to have the media paying for the construction of risers, tents, and so forth. When traveling with the President, the media outlets pay for their transportation, hotel, airfare, and filing center space, as managed by the White House Travel Office. But to charge for credentials, in my experience, is offensive, at best. In this case, you are paying for the access to cover the event, not for facilities, and that's where it's just gone wrong.

You'd think he'd be paying the media for working so hard to try to get him elected.
In the final sprint, folks working in the boiler room, lose vision of the big picture. Fever sets in, in the form of greed. At the tipping point there is always something that leaves a taste on future legacy. I thought Barack Obama's team was beyond this level of mental reasoning.
The Washington Post is going to charge me to read about it and the cable company that provides CNN is going to charge me to watch it.

Easy fix to that. ALL media outlets stop covering anything about Obama starting today. With him falling off the face of the earth 2 weeks before election day will not help him in getting elected.
I've covered several campaigns, conventions, White House travel pool, major league sporting events, etc and there is always a fee charged for services, travel, food, etc.
If you cover the White House, you have to pay to fly, ride, eat, use a phone, use power, etc.
Nothing if fee. If you want a place to stand on a riser, you have to pay your FAIR share. Usually the contractors overcharge as does the local phone/power companies for installing lines and service.
But if you pull-back and think about it; approx 5,000 journalists/tv crews/photographers/radio reporters will have power/internet/phone lines/food/a riser to stand-on that has been installed in a short amount of time.
If this does occur it may mean that there will be less photojournalists covering these events which in turn will mean that there will be more photojournalists marketing their skills as wedding photographers looking to do "photojournalist style" wedding photography because of missing out on that day of work.
Now that's a bigger problem than the lack of news coverage.
